FWD vs R/AWD racer counts...

So why is it you think there are 4 Xs more FWD competition racers at IFOs than A/RWD racers?  Most of the A/RWD guys just like to dyno or run TnT passes only.

Probably because the name of the series "Import". But your series does any excellent job - sticking with your niche.

Thanks for clarification.  You still run a great organization.  Keep it up.

Because MOST imports are FWD.  The V-Dub's, Hondas, Nissans, and such that are most common are all FWD cars.
Only a handful are AWD/RWD, and they're usually more expensive because of the tech used.

I came up the ranks of racing from SCCA to NHRA. Saw the start of the import race craze when it was mostly British, then German and then moved on to Japan made cars. Cost was a major factor, but age of the driver was too. I grew up with RWD and those are the cars I still favor. Todays racers were brought up in a FWD era, where most cars are FWD domestic or import. That is what they will build because that is what they have been exposed to. The cost factor is also an issue, as the sheer availability of FWD cars overshadows it all. There are just more affordable FWD cars out there to choose from then RWD.

I bought my first FWD car 3 years ago...I hated it. Torque steer, nose heavy. Won't go around corners as well as a RWD. After I threw a bunch of money at the suspention I was able to get it up to where I felt safe. I had to buy a new car last week. Again it is FWD, not because I like it, but because there are no RWD cars made for less the $20k. This one has all of what I had done to my past car right from the factory. It's better, more powerful and still gets over 30mpg hwy. However, next year I may be in a Mustang, 300+hp V6, 30mpg and RWD.

On a side note for those that think FWDout handles a RWD, SCCA had to ban the RWD cars in the radial tire series 'cause even the lowly AMC Gremlin was kicking the F WD imports A$$es in the class. Only import that was better was the Mazda RX2 and maybe a few Datsun 510 or BMW 2002. The RWD cars were then sent on to the IT classes to race against themselves. FWD still cannot keep up with a like prepared RWD.

Now as for drag cars.. Look at the 60 ft times of a RWD Vs a FWD... FWD can't launch. Sure they have great ET and trap speed, but they got beat at the starting line every time.

Just my 2 cents

hotrodbob,

FWD cars have come along way, and they are catching up on the 60ty's. I have racers posting up 1.28 , Weight plays a big roll.
